I think it’s one of the most important battles for consumers to fight: the right to know what’s in their food, and how it was grown.

~ Joe Salatin

In 1935, Earl Hawkins moved to the small town of Culpeper to start a job as a milk tester. He came alone, without housing and with a mere $10 in his pocket. Within a few years he raised enough money to purchase some land and thus Belle Meade Farm was born. With the help of the next generation, Belle Meade Farm became a highly successful dairy cattle operation, producing over 15000gal per day.  Changing with times, technology and the third generation, Belle Meade Farm sold the dairy cattle in 2006 and transitioned to primarily crop farming. Through personal family experiences with toxicity and overwhelming food allergies/intolerances, our research and desire for change became priority. Lifestyle changes began with food. We have been raising beef cattle on this farm for over 50 years, thus we know what is good for the cows. We now have a great understanding of what is good for you, the consumer. We continue to practice transitional farming, with emphasis on sustainable practices that will ensure healthy lifestyles for our family and yours. Our passion has become to produce healthy beef free from antibiotics and growth hormones, that is grass fed on pastured land free of chemicals. We continue to operate through family alone, allowing even the fourth generation involvement outside of school. We nurture our cattle as if they were our pets. Our end product speaks for itself.

Belle Meade Pastures thrives on raising animals that never leave the pasture. They are free range, never treated with antibiotics or growth hormones, and with no MSG/nitrates/chemical preservatives added at processing.

We now specialize in Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs). Our registered IPPs are a combination of the original Duroc, old Berkshire, and KuneKune breeds. We chose this breed because of their ability to thrive on pasture as well as their excellent disposition. Along with plenty of pasture, our pigs are also fed local organic micro greens; sunflower, kale, and radish. For added protein, they also enjoy fresh, local A2A2 milk. We hope you enjoy the clean rich flavor!

Our cattle are certified Black Angus crossed with Devon Beef. Daily rotational grazing allows our cattle to graze the richest highest quality grasses available. Pasture grazing ensures a high enzyme, high protein intake which allows our end product to be sustainable and highly nutritious. Grass fed beef has higher concentrations of natural minerals and vitamins as well as vital omega fats. Along with continuous grazing rotation, we finish the last 90 days with homegrown grains for proper marbling of the meat. We currently have 100 cows and are actively expanding our herd.

Our farm is located in Culpeper, VA, just south of D.C. and NOVA.  We are nestled on a 1600 acre farm 5 miles off  of Rt 3, easily accessible from 29, 95, and 66.

Whole cow/pig, half cow/pig, and individual cuts available.
